The Cathedral Parish of St. John the Baptist seeks to proclaim and celebrate the gospel of Jesus Christ through worship, example, and action, recognizing its location in the heart of St. John’s and its responsibility as the Cathedral of the Diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador.
Whether you are local or travelling from afar, we invite you to come visit our Cathedral. Tours are offered during the Summer season and the Cathedral is open through our Office during Office Hours throughout the year.
Have questions? We have the answers!
We are located at 16 Church Hill, St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador
Coming to a civic service, a concert or other event at the Cathedral? Check out the map.
Our main service is at 11 am on Sunday. Once a month we will have a said service at 9 am on Sunday. Weekday Morning Prayer is 9:30 am on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. To see a full listing of regular and special services, please visit our Calendar Page.
There is normally some parking in our parking lot on the South side of the Cathedral, but that is limited on weekdays. There is also on-street parking available on Church Hill and Cathedral Street, and there is a parking garage on Duckworth Street, just a couple of minutes walk from the Cathedral.
Most Sundays (except during the Summer) there is a Sunday School during the 11 am service. There is also a Children's Area in the main Nave of the Cathedral, where children can explore without leaving the service.
Our Liturgies are fairly traditional and a little formal. Most of our services are BCP (Book of Common Prayer), which is the traditional liturgy of the Anglican Church. Once per month we normally have a more contemporary language service (BAS - Book of Alternative Services, or similar). The main Sunday Liturgy is normally a sung service, with specific parts sung by the Priest and the Choir.
Yes, the Cathedral is accessible through the main entrance on Gower Street. There are spaces for wheelchairs and strollers within the Nave of the Cathedral, and there is an accessible washroom on the main floor of the Cathedral (behind the Labyrinth).
We are always looking for new singers for our Choir. If you are interested, please contact our Director of Music, Sharon Whalen, at Music@ourcathedral.ca or speak to her after one of our Sunday services.
If you are interested in becoming a Server, please contact the Dean: Roger@ourcathedral.ca.
